What To Do If Your Pet Dies At Home

The loss of a pet is never easy, and it may not be something you want to think about. However, it is important to prepare for that fateful day. Pet loss is tragic no matter where the loss takes place, but if it happens at your home you may be overwhelmed at the thought of your next steps. Paws at Peace Cremation is here to take some of the weight off of your shoulders during this difficult time. We offer beautiful memorial products so you can forever keep your pet close to your heart. Read on to find a few tips that will help you prepare for cremation services after your pet’s passing at home.

1. Ensure your pet is deceased

We know this may be difficult, but you want to ensure your pet is deceased. It is not uncommon for elderly or dying pets to have very shallow breathing or to lie still for long periods of time.

2. Move your pet to a towel or blanket

It is normal for your pet to expel fluids as its muscles begin to relax after passing. In order to lessen your cleanup load, you may want to move the pet to an old towel or blanket. This will also help with transferring your pet later on. To further aid in transfer, you should tuck your pet’s legs into their body and place them in the middle of the towel.

3. Allow your other pets to sniff your deceased pet

By doing this, your other animals will begin to understand what has happened so they can begin their own grieving process.

4. Keep your pet’s body cool

While you are waiting to transport your pet’s body, it is important to keep it cool. You should try to wrap the pet in a couple of plastic bags and move it to a dry, cool, safe place until you can deliver it to your local veterinarian’s office.
